The Department of Education, Development, Teaching and Learning (EDTL) at Central Washington University (CWU) seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor specializing in Special Education for start in fall 2020.
The Department of Education, Development, Teaching and Learning has approximately 20 full-time faculty, who offer undergraduate majors, minors and/or teaching endorsements in Bilingual Education/ Teaching English as a Second Language, Early Childhood Education, Literacy, Middle Level Education, Highly Capable (Gifted) Education, and Special Education. EDTL also offers graduate and/or advanced certificate programs in highly capable, bilingual/TESL, literacy education and special education. The EDTL Department seeks a highly prepared, engaging, and passionate Constructivist teacher educator to join our teaching faculty in Special Education (Prek-16) Programs. Our mission is to provide excellent quality instruction through the Constructivist teaching philosophy and methodology and to implement the teacher-scholar model of professional engagement. The ideal candidates will have evidence of classroom experience with diverse learners, as well as strong communication, interpersonal and technological skills. Teaching is the primary focus of faculty responsibility at CWU; faculty dedicate 80% of their efforts to teaching, 15% to scholarship, and 5% to service.
The Assistant/Associate Professor selected for this position will be a key partner in our Special Education major and minor programs. This individual will teach content, methods, and assessment courses, which are aligned with Washington State and National Standards. This individual will also have opportunities to coach and mentor teacher candidates in field experience courses.
Earned doctorate in Special Education or a closely-related field. Doctoral degree must be completed no later than September 16, 2020.
Minimum of three years of teaching exceptional and diverse learners in grades Prek-12; experience should be in the United States or settings with comparable education systems.
Eligible for Washington State Teaching Certification or hold a valid teaching certificate.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity. Must demonstrate a commitment to the diversity of a multi-cultural population, as well as work effectively in a team-based environment, seeking continuous improvement and adherence to the university philosophy.
Strong communication and technological skills as well as effective interpersonal skills as it relates to interactions with students, peers and community partners.
Specialization in autism, early childhood, or low incidence exceptionalities.
Evidence of demonstrated excellence in teaching at Prek-12 with some experience with respect to post-secondary transition.
Experience with teacher preparation assessment with respect to Special Education
Experience and/or professional preparation in culturally responsive teaching and working with diverse learners.
Demonstrated commitment to the Constructivist teaching philosophy and methodology.
Involvement in professional organizations related to Special Education.
Willingness to collaborate with the Special Education assistive and instructional technology team.
Experience with Distance Education, online, and/or hybrid models of instruction.
