Bertschi School, founded in 1975, is a Washington State approved elementary school. We are a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS). The school serves children from pre-kindergarten through grade five. The Director of Learning Services is responsible to work in coordination with the Learning Services team and the Assistant Head of School to ensure that all the children at Bertschi School are progressing at their just right level. This position combines teaching and administrative duties, roughly teaching .6 and supervising and administrating .4. The Director of Learning Services supervises the three full-time specialists and the Coordinator of Advanced Learning as well as coordinates with a contracted Speech Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist. This role is responsible for maintaining and communicating information about student’s learning profiles with teachers as well as leading the team in conducting two yearly school-wide screenings. The Director of Learning Services reports directly to the Head of School, collaborates significantly with the Assistant Head of School, and serves as an active member of the school’s Leadership Team.
Support teachers in communicating with families regarding areas of academic challenge
Work closely with the team to create and supervise the implementation of individualized reading, language, math, and study skill support program for K-5 students with diverse learning needs
Employ culturally responsive teaching practices that align with the school’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Provide and supervise team in providing one-on-one instruction in reading, writing, math, and study skills in an engaging and nurturing atmosphere to support academic success
Attend professional development training as related to individual students and school-wide initiatives including developing DEI competency
Coordinate, supervise, and teach reading groups as needed
Complete progress reports for assigned students and lead the team in writing goals and data-driven reports, participate in related parent/teacher meetings, and maintain frequent communication with parents and teachers
Participate in department, grade level, student, and community meetings as necessary
Collaborate with classroom teachers and the LS team to understand learning needs, plan differentiated instruction, and develop success plans for students
Manage a program budget and balance the program’s revenue and school-wide initiatives into decision making regarding scheduling
Coordinate and supervise ongoing department tasks such as student screenings and assessments, curriculum accommodations, record management, and teacher/parent communication
Create school-wide learning services schedule in coordination with classroom teachers and specialists
Coordinate summer programing for LS students
Coordinate with Leadership team in providing PD for faculty and parent coffees related to student learning
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
Experience working with children of color
Master’s degree in education, special education, or a related field
5 or more years of experience in an educational environment required
Working knowledge of current reading practices, systematic reading curriculum, language-based learning disabilities, direct math instruction, and differentiated instruction
Working knowledge of assessment of learning disabilities and attention challenges
Preference will be given to candidates with specialized training and direct instruction experience in literacy (reading and writing) and a history of providing positive results for students with learning disabilities
