The Indiana University School of Education at IUPUI in Indianapolis is seeking a Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education (non-tenure track appointment) with strengths in teaching, leadership, and scholarship that are grounded in early childhood pedagogy and theories in urban settings. This position also includes the role as Program Coordinator for the Early Childhood program.
The School of Education at IUPUI is an urban-serving institution located in the heart of Indianapolis. Our school of education has approximately 30 full-time faculty, many of whom are actively engaged in teaching, scholarship of teaching, and research that focuses on social justice and anti-racist practices, partnerships with urban communities and schools, and critical perspectives in education.
Faculty in our teacher education programs are committed to preparing teachers to enact transformative practices in urban schools, to participate in field-based experiences that support our teacher candidates, and to contribute to the goal of diversifying the teacher workforce. Our Early Childhood program has two pathways- traditional undergraduate entry as well as students transferring with an associate's degree who are seeking a baccalaureate degree and a teaching license in early childhood education (birth-age 8).
Responsibilities: ● Serve as Program Coordinator for the Early Childhood Education Program. This role includes scheduling courses and instructors, coordinating student teaching placements, coordinating benchmark assessments, coordinating accreditation assessments as well as leading ongoing program development, innovation, and evaluation. ● Teach early childhood courses that ground pre-service teachers in deep understanding of critical social justice pedagogy, human development, social-emotional learning, and urban communities within strong field-based experiences. ● Support for and design of field experiences for pre-service teachers , including the potential to work with pre-service teachers over the course of their program in which they engage in increasingly sophisticated enactments of teaching that values students' family, community and cultural practices in and out of school. ● Lead mutually beneficial partnerships with local schools, including working with pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, families and community partners. ● Engage in the scholarship of teaching. ● Provide service to department, university, community, and professional organizations focused on advocacy, promotion and growth of the urban Early Childhood program.
Required Qualifications: ● Earned doctorate in Education or Child Development with emphasis in one or more of these areas: Early Childhood Education, Curriculum Studies, or Urban/Multicultural Education. (ABD candidates will be considered.) ● Capacity to teach undergraduate courses in Early Childhood Education program. ● Critical pedagogy and scholarship addressing issues of power, privilege and empowerment and the ways these issues affect children, families and communities. ● Expertise working with diverse and urban student populations in early childhood settings.
Preferred Qualifications: ● A minimum of three years of early childhood teaching experience (PK-3) in an urban setting. ● Experience working with infants and toddlers, but also knowledge of children (birth to age five) in multiple contexts such as family child care, in home or center-based child care, Early Head Start/Head Start, and public school early childhood settings. ● Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to urban issues. ● Experience or interest in forming partnerships with urban schools to support prospective and practicing teachers in linguistically, culturally and economically diverse settings. ● Experience or desire to work with diverse and/or underserved populations. ● Strong methodological training in research and evidence of potential for an active research record. ● A secondary area of expertise such as: literacy, mathematics, bi/multilingual education, special education, social studies, science.
