Job Description:
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for appointment to a 9-month tenure earning position at the level of Assistant Professor to begin August 2026. Salary and terms of appointment are commensurate with prior experience. The Assistant Professor in Elementary Mathematics Education will help prepare pre- and in-service teachers across grades P–6, with an emphasis on meeting the needs of pre-service teachers according to the Alabama Numeracy Act. The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Mathematics Education, or a closely related field and will engage in scholarly activities (40%) such as securing grants, conducting research, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting at conferences. The candidate will also teach (40%) undergraduate and graduate courses, contribute service (20%) to the department, school, university, and the profession, collaborate with faculty and administrators to meet accreditation standards, and develop partnerships with schools to enhance program offerings.

Required Qualifications:
An earned doctorate in Early Childhood/Elementary Education, Mathematics Education, Curriculum and Instruction; or a closely related field, or an anticipated earned doctorate in one of the above by August 2026
Evidence of strong potential for successful university teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels
Evidence of an emerging research agenda / strong research potential (publications, presentations, procuring external funding)
Strong interest in community, school, and classroom-based research
At least 2 years of teaching in a P–6 classroom
Preferred Qualifications:
K–6 Special Education teaching experience and/or a research emphasis including a population focus of students with or at-risk for disabilities
Experience with teaching courses in the preparation of mathematics teachers at the early childhood and elementary levels
Successful public school teaching experience with a variety of student populations
Record of scholarly publications and presentations on topics related to early childhood/elementary mathematics teaching and learning and/or mathematics teaching and learning in the context of K–6 special education
